Posted on

Transfer permits an extension user to send (i.e., extend) an active call to any other extension in the system. With Transfer, any extension user can quickly send a call to the desired co-worker. A call a user transfers automatically recalls if not picked up at the destination extension.
An extension user can Transfer both outside calls and Intercom calls.

You can transfer calls in two ways.

Screened Transfer – The transferring user announces the call to the destination before hanging up.
Unscreened Transfer – The transferring party extends the call without an announcement.

To Transfer a call:

  1. Do not hang up.
  2. Press the TRANSFER button.
  3. Dial your co-workers extension
  4. Announce the call to your co-worker (screened transfer) or simply hang up to send the call through unscreened.

Tips: You can press the flashing line key to return to the call if your co-worker doesn’t want it.  You can press the V-Mail button to send the call to your co-workers voice mail.

NEC DSX Line Ringing

Posted on

Incoming calls on a NEC DSX telephone system usually follow Key Ringing (3112).  The DSX 22B and 34B Display Phones can be programmed to ring or not ring on an individual basis by using the feature code # 7 2 5.   Press # 7 2 5 and you’ll notice that all of your line appearance buttons are now either red, green, or amber.

  • A red light means your phone will not ring (lamp only).
  • Green means your phone will ring (standard).
  • Flashing Green means a delay ring.
  • Slow flashing green means night ring.

Press the line button repeatedly to cycle through the ring types.  Press the speaker button when you are finished.  If you press # 7 2 5 and do not see any lights on your phone you may be using loop keys instead of line keys and will need to enter system programming to make your phone ring.

Connecting a paging horn to the NEC DSX telephone system

Posted on

To connect an external paging horn or system to the NEC DSX telephone system you will need a 1/8″ mono audio cable connected to the audio output on the CPU card. The other end of the audio cable should match the input on your paging system. If you are connecting to a Valcom paging horn you can splice the end of the 1/8″ audio cable directly to the TIP and RING wire on the paging horn.

The audio output is located behind the audio input 1 and audio input 2 on the CPU card.

To connect the paging horn you should run a standard cat3 from the NEC DSX telephone system out to the location you want to place the horn.

Splice the white/blue and blue/white wire to the paging horn TIP and RING wires and the white/orange and orange/white wires to the GND and -24VDC wires.

At the NEC DSX telephone system splice the white/blue blue/white wires to the 1/8″ audio cable going to the audio out minijack. Connect the white/orange and orange/white wires to the power supply as indicated on the power supply instructions.

Connecting Music Or Message On Hold To A NEC DSX

Posted on

The NEC DSX-80 and DSX-160 telephone systems have 3 1/8″ minijacks located on the CPU card. The 2 minijacks closest to the outside are the audio inputs. The first minijack is audio in 1, the second is audio in 2 and the third is a page output. To connect music-on-hold you will need a mono audio cable with a 1/8” minijack on one end and a connector that matches your music player on the other end.

nec dsx music on hold input

By default the NEC DSX is programmed to play music from audio source 1. This can be changed on a line by line basis in program 3103-05. If you want a true message on hold system, one that will play advertisements or specials for your company we recommend the OHP 8000. It comes with all the required cables to connect to the NEC DSX telephone system and includes some nice software if you’re the creative type and would like to make your own messages.

NEC DSX Intramail Mailbox Types

Posted on

The NEC DSX Intramail has 16 special mailboxes that can be used for 4 different functions.  These mailboxes are numbered 001 through 016 (or 801 – 816 depending on your version) and they can be programmed to perform the following functions:

  • Instruction Mailbox: An instruction mailbox is used to give callers…. instructions!  Normally these mailboxes are used for your day and night greeting where you are giving callers options to reach different people or departments in your company.  The options that callers can dial are programmed in the dial action tables.
  • Announcement Mailbox: The announcement mailbox is used to give your callers information but not the ability to dial anything.  The most common use for the announcement mailbox is a message the gives directions to your office, office hours or fax number.  When a caller listens to the whole message he or she is transferred back to the previous instruction mailbox.
  • Subscriber Mailbox: This mailbox will play a greeting and then let the caller leave a message.
  • Directory Mailbox: This will allow the caller to dial the first few digits of an employees name then transfer the call to that employee.  This can be by first or last name but not both in the same mailbox.  The employee name that is searched is based on the name programmed on the phone.

NEC DSX Intramail Basics

Posted on

Adding a voice mail to your phone system can increase your employee productivity, make your company sound more professional and allow you to provide superior customer service. The voice mail/auto attendant for the NEC DSX telephone system is the Intramail.

The NEC DSX Intramail is both a voice mail and an auto-attendant. The Intramail is available in 4 or 8 ports. A port allows 1 person access to the voice mail, that person can be leaving a message, listening to a message or listening to the company greeting. The ports are grouped together so that if one of the ports is being used a caller will roll-over to the next available voice mail ports. The pilot number (like an extension number) of this group is is 700.

NEC has recently released a PRO version of the Intramail that will Email messages from your mailbox directly into your In-Box. Messages can then be listened to as a .WAV file over your PC speakers. This is a great feature that allows you to easily forward and distribute messages to other employees in the office.

To access the voice mail you can press your V-Mail button (which will take you into that extensions mailbox) or press Intercom 700 (which will prompt you for the mailbox you want to enter). If you are at another employee’s phone and want to access your mailbox you would press Intercom 700 and then dial in your extension number.

The Intramail has several special mailboxes that can be used for your company greetings, announcements or group mailboxes. A description of each can be found here.
